Harper dismisses reports of F-35 cost hikes

CBC has this story on the F-35 purchase:
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says the cost of Canada's new stealth fighter jets is still within budget, even after the department in charge confirmed the original price will rise.

The Department of National Defence confirmed Monday to The Canadian Press that officials have been told the cost of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jets is expected to jump.

The statement comes after several official reports from the U.S. government said the price has risen from the original 2001 estimate of $75 million per plane, cited frequently by the Conservatives. Read the full story at CBC here...

FedUpInOttawa comments: How can this man claim to be a conservative, after letting a multi-billion-dollar contract without tender and without competition? No fiscal conservative, nor anyone claiming to be a free-market economist, by any definition of those words that I understand, would think of doing something like that. That is either corruption or incompetence, or both. Neither of which qualifies him to lead our country.

More contempt for democracy. Even in a majority government, Parliament should see the cost details and the options before approving an expenditure of this magnitude.

How can anyone vote for this man or his party?

AutoQuality counters: so if the liberals have their way, we will cancel the F-35 contract, flush the $200 million chretien invested in the program down the toilet, pay hundreds of millions more in cancellation fees, give the canadian aerospace and defense industries the collective finger, spend a few billion more on maintaining our rapidly aging F-18s, then ultimately go spend just as much on some european jets any way.

or maybe the liberals would prefer if we just forced our pilots to keep flying 40-50 year old aircraft, like they did in the 90s when chretien flushed half a billion dollars down the toilet with the EH-101 helicopter contract cancellation (anyone else see a pattern?) forcing the military to continue flying the seaking helicopters. the seakings subsequently took many a young canadian lives when falling out of the sky, spent most ot their time being serviced (costing hundreds of millions more), and were only available for use about 40% of the time.

when the liberals aren't trying to cut our military spending down to be on par with peru, they're killing contracts and costing us billions in cancellation fees for nothing, only to have to go and buy the same equipment years later for more money.

OlderCdn7096 offers: The U.S. isn't dismissing cost hikes of the F-35... quite the opposite.
"It's the plane that costs more than Australia" ("we're spending more on this plane than Australia's entire GDP ($924 billion). "

"Money is pouring into the F-35 vortex. In 2010, Pentagon officials found that the cost of each plane had soared by over 50 percent above the original projections. The program has fallen years behind schedule, causing billions of dollars of additional expense, and won't be ready until 2016. An internal Pentagon report concluded that: "affordability is no longer embraced as a core pillar." "

The Dutch cancelled their order of the F-35.
Even Australia is going back on forth on their purchase and exhorbitant cost of it.
I believe Turkey cancelled it and even the U.K. has had their concerns.
The only person who isn't concerned with the cost seems to be Harper.
